Upgrading from Magento 1 to Magento 2 ?

We have put together some simple tips to help guide you through the upgrade process

More Information on Magento Upgrades

We aim to take the stress and worry out of migrating your Magento 1 store to Magento 2

Why do you need to upgrade?

Official support for Magento 1 will cease by June 2020. Sites that remain on this platform will open themselves to greater risk and growing performance issues, resulting in decreasing traffic and sales. Without doubt Magento 1 stores will become more targeted for spam and cyber attacks.

There are essentially 4 steps to upgrading from Magento 1 to Magento 2

  • Magento Design
  • Magento Extensions
  • Magento Customisations
  • Your Data Migration

Design Migration

It is not possible to directly migrate your existing design from Magento 1 to Magento 2. This is due to the enhancements and changes that have been made within the front-end code of Magento 2. Your existing Magento store may also not be making best use of the latest responsive technologies and enhancements. So, as part of the upgrade process, we will update the design of your store, to ensure you are making full use of responsive design, appealing to the growing number of users accessing your website via mobile devices.

This is also an opportunity to breath new life into your website and make any changes that you feel will visually enhance your customers shopping experience. As part of the design process, we take into account your existing brand and target audience. We also understand the importance of responsive design and would ensure your new web store is making full use of Magento’s new responsive features.

Magento Extensions

Magento 1 Extensions will not work within Magento 2. This means your current Magento 1.x store extensions will soon be unsupported. This opens your store to becoming more vulnerable to attack and a much higher risk of a data breach. Whilst some of the core extensions have been updated to work with Magento 2 we recommend taking stock of these extensions to ensure they bring value to your webstore and protect site stability and security.

From our experience too many extensions, or choosing the wrong extensions can cause site-wide stability issues and overly complicates website administration. So as part of the upgrade process, we will look at the existing extensions you use within your current Magento webstore, and make recommendations on extensions to use moving forward.

Magento Customised Code

If you have used custom code within your existing Magento 1 store, the chances are this may not work within the newer Magento 2 platform. So it is important we understand a specific feature you wish to retain, so we can best advise whether this can be migrated. In our experience customisation of a Magento store can lead to site-wide problems, and in turn, adds additional administration issues and can lead to unnecessary bugs that require additional support and can lead to down time.

As part of the upgrade process, we will work with you to understand any custom code you have within your Magento Store and make recommendations on how best to upgrade to Magento 2; Using reliable extensions in place of custom code.

Your Website Data

Your data is hugely important, and ensuring this is smoothly moved from your existing Magento store to the new Magento 2 platform is crucial. Magento themselves offer a tool to help migrate the data, however this method is not always best to use. We will work with you to consider the best solution for your data, to ensure we choose the most reliable and smoothest method. In some cases it is best to re-add your data manually to make sure you are making use of all the new features within Magento 2. This is fine for smaller sites, but we appreciate with larger websites with much larger product databases, a more automated approach is required.
